Hello Lohith .. How did you prepare for Culture .. Last year we found many questions like flute playing krishna etc .. Is spectrun book on culture sufficient for this exam ?

    • tejlohitreddy
      Jul 26, 2013 @ 11:33:35

i didnt read spectrum. i read from krishna reddy,s indian history. it has a few chapters on art architecture. i think spectrum is good. but dont read the entire thing. read what is necessary. but i think its difficult to answer questions on culture since no book covers it properly including spectrum.

hello Lohith how you prepared culture .. I am reading Spectrum ,, is that enough for mains ?

Thank you for the reply sir,for public policy I have ignou book but I should spend at least 1 week, what did u do for this topic?
And also in pub ad we refer 2-3 books for single chapter, how to revise atlast?did u make ur own notes?
Arc reports is it suffice if we refer summary?

    • tejlohitreddy
      Jul 26, 2013 @ 11:36:31

for public policy i read sunil gupta notes, ignou notes( a little)( i think its average), nicolas henry( chapter 10), and still i feel i havent read adequately. so if you find any good books please read them.
making notes will help you if you are reading from multiple sources, but if a topic is concise and good in a single book then dont read from other books.
arc report is useful when you dont find the topics in any books. but if you have proper notes then recommendations are enough

Hello Lohith … I am preparing CSE with anthro as optional … I found from previous papers that paper 2 questions are little tricky n more generalized .. n wer as in paper 1 most of the qns are direct n got lot of scope to write really good ans with diagrams .. But I found most of the people got less marks in paper 1 .. what can be the reason ? what sould be the approach for paper 1 n paper 2 get max marks .. n also in paper 1 i found 1 qn – how natural selection acts on variation which is little tricky to ans I felt … Can you discuss little about this ? .. thank you

    • tejlohitreddy
      Jul 28, 2013 @ 11:11:47

anup, may be that is the reason, because everybody writes well, they search for new things in the answers and there by award less marks. but you cant go on reading new things, so stick to what you are reading and try to do your best. and i cant discuss any questions bcoz i almost forgot everything i read).

Thank you lohith … And one more question .. What is the role of writing skills in GS ? Will good flowery and good verbatim give more marks ? Should we impress the paper correcter with language ? .. Can I know your opinion on this ?

    • tejlohitreddy
      Jul 28, 2013 @ 22:41:01

The exam is just like our graduation exam anup, but here our job depends on it. that is the only difference. does good language help? it helps only if you know the basic content which by the way is far difficult than many people think.

Hello Lohith .. For Ancient and medieval History I read from TMH book .. n solved MCQs at the end .. I am sure for years ,kings n kingdoms .. but I wish to study from some text book to make sure I score good in prelims .. I saw krishna reddy from your book list .. Is that good and readable ? or any other book you want to suggest ?

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 01, 2013 @ 12:22:13

rahul, never read tmh, krishna reddy is avg. most questions from ancient and medieval are from cultural aspect and not on kings and kingdoms as you can see from previous papers. krishna reddy has a chapter or two on those aspects but you need to expand with other sources like internet. dont know any other book

hello lohit……..im pursuing my btech(3rd year)…..when is the best time to strt prep…….is civils-an unpredictable exam…(they say it as a gamble)…….so one shd thnk of an alternate(backup plan) and then go in this civils prep mode…..or juz after btech give ur max efforts in the 1st attempt.(because after btech u will be in the studying mode) ……and take the coaching in delhi-sriram r vajiram rather thn in hyd……..btw…..where have u taken ur coaching
wts ur opinion on success ratio in 1st attempt…..thanks in anticipation

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 04, 2013 @ 17:46:11

rohith, is it unpredictable? i cant really say? but involves a little luck. thats for sure. but your efforts dont go waste normally. there might be variation in the end result(ie which service u may get) but getting into the service depends on the amount of work u do. if you do you work properly, u will definitely get into the service. but no one can say that they will definitely get the service they want. back up plan is not mandatory. but it will be helpful. i know friends who resigned from jobs and wrote the exam. it all depends on how strongly motivated are you. delhi institutes i dont know much about, but i can only guess that they will be marginally better than those in hyd. but i dont think there is any need to go to delhi. since for mains no institute will do the justice. and as far as prelims is concerned u can get good coaching in hyd itself. i dont have any statistics about the success rate in 1st attempt. but since the changed pattern after 2008 it seems chances of clearing in the first attempt have increased drastically. further i doesnt matter which attempt it is. if you read what you ought to u can do it 1st attempt.

    Aug 04, 2013 @ 23:04:21

ty….lohit ….for ur valuable suggestions………wuld u apprise me…..hw long u prepared…..as per ur knowledge any institues in hyd,……i will be thankful to u…if u apprise me shd i start prepartn from 3rd year(btech)…..shd i opt for weekend coaching at analog ias ashok nagar…..so that i culd get the idea of pattern…….and so that i culd kick off my prep after btech……..
i am really concerned of wt if i dont clear(though its seems pessimistic)………..because i hail from a relatively gud engin clg in ap but no way matches with iit……so……the chances of me (at extreme cases) settling to software field if nt fruitful(if i wnt clear even after 3 attempts)……..are very less…………….so wuld u suggest me to prepare seriously after my btech……without any job r mtech……..thanks in anticipation……..ur suggestions are highly valuable to me

      Aug 05, 2013 @ 11:41:56

an year before prelims would be sufficient. institutes i know only db kumar institutes that too only for prelims. it is good. its a good idea to start prep from 3rd year. i dont know much about analog. but i have heard from a friend that its not up to the mark. i cant really suggest anything about your career choices. its best for you to decide. weigh your options and decide carefully. but if i were you i would start my prep from now itself so that you can continue later doing the job.

    Aug 05, 2013 @ 22:26:04

hi……..lohit………wuld u suggest a good coaching centre in hyd …..besides that…….regarding economy…whch book shd we follow fr prelims and mains and……also is struggle fr independence-suggestable book………..i am dithering between choosing one optional……can u suggest in ur perspective pubad vs history…( iam btech student)…………on what areas of hindu shd we pay concentration….shd we mantain notes of current affairs…if yes….from 1 year before exam r……nthng as such …..thamks in advance

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 06, 2013 @ 12:31:00

i can only suggest for prelims. i went to db kumar institute for prelims.
for economy i followed my institute running notes for prelims and used internet and newspaper for mains, but sriram ias notes seems to be good.( i am not sure)
i can only speak about pub ad since it was one of my optionals. last year’s paper was very difficult. but it might not be the case for the next year. between pub ad and history i think pub ad is shorter in syllabus and scope. kindly look into other optionals like anthropology, psychology, sociology, electrical engineering, mech eng, civil eng
regarding the paper you will find out yourself what to read and what not to read after a few months of reading. dont conc on political news, sport etc
maintaining notes is mandatory if you want to use it later for revision. 1 year is more than enough but i recommend you start from now itself.

is db kumar gud……he about krishna pradeep and analog(supposedly Delhi faculty-touting)…….wr can we get sriram notes..(in hyd)………….
and hw about my prev question….is bipin Chandra -struggle fr independence gud fr prelims and mains….. .
and have u started any prep while pursuing ur mbbs…..r directly a serious prep after mbbs…..hw much time u studied daily(though it depends on individual)…..juzt a opinion……thnks in advance

      • tejlohitreddy
        Aug 06, 2013 @ 18:57:08

yeah its good for prelims and i dont know about mains. i dont know about krishna pradeep and as i said opinion on analog was my friends and not mine. i dont comment on coaching centres i didnt attend. u can get any notes or material in ashok nagar. i havent read bipin chandra but many prefer spectrum’s modern india. i started my prep while doing mbbs. as you said daily timings depend on the individual and i read neary 4 to 5 hrs per day on an avg.

sir………….even i had the same doubt (previous person rohan asked)………..hw many hrs u prepared while in mbbs…..wt sort of preparation u have done while in mbbs………..and after ur graduation……hw many hrs u studied and this tym wt prep strategy u employed……………………..
wt is the possible time we shd spare while in graduation……..thanks in anticipation

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 07, 2013 @ 22:57:17

i m bored with this question.. as i said it depends on the individual. some days we read 2 hrs somedays none someother days 10 to 15 hrs. so it depends on the mood. important thing is whether we completed the syllabus or not.

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 08, 2013 @ 11:42:02

even in graduation it depends on your work load and stress factors. will read more during weekends and inevitably less during weekdays. ultimate thing as i had said earlier is to have a clear plan and dead lines to complete the syllabus and not how many hours

for the first three months ie the foundation course, the pay comes to around 22000, and from then on we get regualar salary payband (15000 to 39000+ 5400 grade pay) + DA etc etc. over all it comes to about 35 to 36k and for officers of north east it comes to around 40 to 41k. i dont know the details.
and we dont get paid for travel charges to mussorie

its your decision to join coaching and if so what to take. make according to your convinience.
u can start with newspaper for a few months and then go into books. complete ncerts if you have ample time. if not leave them.
      international news is very important.

culture is too complicated and you cant study from one book. but spectrums indian culture book is good. but dont read everything in the book. read only what is necessary. see previous years questions and analyse which topics they are asking from and read those topics

    Aug 28, 2013 @ 10:21:14

Sir,I am writing here an answer for a questn from pub ad paper 2.I think u must have attempted this questn.I want to know wher I stand and how much should I improve bcoz I am not understanding the level of answers one must have written in pub ad who got the rank

    Q.’judges shouldn’t govern the country.they can only lay down a law,not interfere with governance’.discuss
Ans. Theory of separation of powers incorporated by the Indian constitution calls for separation of 3 organs of the state- exe, leg, jud.though governance of the country is prerogative of the executive but the judiciary’s efforts to make the exe accountable and responsible to the needs of the citizens led to judicial governance.
Article 50 of the constitution separates judiciary from executive.the constitution clearly demarcates the powers between 3 wings of the state.it provides judiciary the power of adjudication and interpretation of law while to exe the governance of the country which is the process of implementation of decisions.
However,in recent times judiciary has been increasingly issuing directives in the realm of governance.for example, issuing directives to the govt on river-interlinking project, which some argue thet only admn can understand the nitty gritty of the project like cost, feasibility etc; issuing directives to CBI and asking it to report directly to the court trespassing the exe as in 2g case etc.
Though this activism by the jud is good to occupy the space created by the exe due to it’s apathy to various issues but in long run it may disturb the balance of power and lead to concentration of power in one wing.so to reduce the interference of jud in the governance, exe should be assertive and not vacate constitutional space by it’s non- performance.

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 28, 2013 @ 15:38:51

the answer should suffice. but judicial activism is not that bad. it led to origin of pil which is a powerful tool in hands of citizens and its activism is 2g is justified given the scale of losses and the govt itself being one of the accused. but its directives in inter river linking amount to judicial overreach. so write your answer accordingly. and you can state a few more examples. i forgot them

  22. Priyanka
    Aug 28, 2013 @ 16:52:15

I am not saying jud activism is bad but conveying that due to non-performance of exe,jud has to play more assertive role.

Am I addressing the demand of the questn?somehow am not satisfied with the answer

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 28, 2013 @ 17:48:25

as i said what u wrote looks sufficient. but i am just saying dont club both 2g and interlinking of rivers in the same way. i feel they are different. and add more examples.

hello lohit,i am jus askn with curiosity..r u that intelligent as u have cracked the exam very soon..u have told that u started prepn seriously 6m befor prelims and u started one optional after mains hw much ever it may relate to ur graduation but some people take years of prepn.i think u must have studied 18 hrs per day:)
tell me is it that some experience is required for the exam after ur gradutn i.e gaining more knowldge, maturity etc

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 29, 2013 @ 10:56:53

gaining knowledge and maturity are essential for any job not just civil services

    Aug 30, 2013 @ 21:27:45

Hi lohit.is it that u got highest marks in pub ad.how did u do without any coaching and with few books.
Have u practised answer writing b4 as many say it is very imp and to give many test series for pub ad
How did u ensure that ur answers r diff from others to get very good marks especially in paper 2.did u attempt for 300m in paper2
I think this yr for every one pub ad became a curse but for u it helped for ur final score

For me when I see pub ad questions and try to answer..I don’t knw how to get good marks and how well should I write.
Can u jus tell what to write in intro and conclusion

In prelims if u recall hw many q did u attempt, esp paper 1 and hw many can we make intelligent guess

One last q were u confident after writing mains that u get interview call

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 31, 2013 @ 22:02:56

      i didnt practice answer writing,
      i didnt try anything different,
there is no intro and conclusion. its not an essay competition. if you know the answer you will write it and will get good marks, if u dont know you wont thats it,
i dont recall correctly, i think i was confident about nearly 45 questions and i guessed about a 30 questions. rest i didnt answer
i dont want to answer the last question

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 31, 2013 @ 21:59:58

it depends on the individual concerned, but i would say it will be sufficient if one starts his prep 1 to 1 and half year before prelims.

follow the syllabus clearly. i know its difficult to cover the entire syllabus. but atleast try to revise what you read already and achieve perfection in those topics

sir , while writing 20/25 mark questions in GS …is it necessary to give intro or we can write about the topic from the beginning..

      Oct 23, 2013 @ 22:50:54

if you have subject knowledge, then there is no necessity for intro and conclusions

hello sir…..can u tell about physical standards ….Imean ur medical tests…..
      r they very strict……
I have a problem with my eye….but the Gazette says….for non technical services mypioa is accepted but without pathological myopia……but I May fall under pathological myopia….in that case as per gazzate I will be deemed unfit…..
but are they really that meticulous……
have u heard someone lost job…on grounds of medical issue…
as u are already into service….
do u know….who deals with this ….and I will be grateful if u suggest any contact info….or relevant dept to contact….
      thanks in anticipation

      • tejlohitreddy
        Oct 23, 2013 @ 22:27:28

ranjit, normally the medical tests are not that strict. they wouldnt know if you have pathological myopia. if they find out, then you are not eligible for technical services like ips, irts, rpf etc etc. buy there is very less chance of they finding out that. for relevant information file rti with upsc

    • tejlohitreddy
      Oct 23, 2013 @ 22:44:04

anush reddy, contingency theory is mentioned clearly in the syllabus, but its difficult to answer a few questions in public administration. s polinaidu though easy to read doesnt cover all topics. you have to do a lot of work. you can make use of libraries, previous journals on administration, internet. etc. but do a detailed study of all topics mentioned in the syllabus. leave out the very vague topics.

    Hi Lohith Sir,

I am very surprised that you are investing your time to answer our questions. I guess Civil Service is not hectic! :)

It was two weeks ago that I learned more about IAS. And here I am, all set to crack the exam. I have one year of “full-time” study (yes, I am “deadly” serious about this) to prepare for prelims and main exams.

I was wondering about Public Administration. It’s not the subject I am passionate about per se, but having read books of similar kind I don’t have any problem with this optional. My question to you is this: how should I really start preparation? Should I equally divide my time for all the subjects or read books at length (I can do that and have that previously).

This is going to be my first attempt. Here is what I did in the past two books:

    – Read 30% of Indian Polity by Laxmikanth.
    – Read 30% of spectrum’s Modern India.
    – Read NCERT books.

Going through your comments, I have realized that:

    – Buying TMH is a waste of money and time.
    – It’s important to do chapters selectively

My background is engineering and I am barely good in Economics.

I was thinking if “now” is the right time to prepare for PA (while also reading newspaper… by the way, do you recommend The Hindu or/and anything else?).

If you can tell me a list of books for PA, we would be grateful as well. :)

    Really appreciate your help.

    Talk soon,

      Oct 23, 2013 @ 22:32:00

anon, public administration has not been very scoring during my attempt. if you have any other optional which you are comfortable with like one of the engineering subjects or smaller subjects like anthro or pscyhco please look into them. then if you are determined about public administration then be ready to do lot of work.. the book list has been provided in the blog itself in the link info for civil servants, regarding time allocation, you can read general studies on a daily basis and then allot some time of each day for different subjects, the hindu is sufficient.

sir…..actually I have some problem in retina…..it is nt a major problem and I got it treated…..
    but the Gazette says…..
any disease whch may likely render one unfit in future date…..as such….how will they judge probability…..
will it be problem…..I M pretty confident of clearing the exam…..but this is really….troubling me…..are they really that stringent…..
can we circumvent by giving money(sry fr corruption)…..is it possible…
    shd I continue my prep…….
have u heard any ur batch mate being facing medical report problem……r have u heard…..UR reply is of cardinal imporrtance to me….pls sir leme know…..

anna , i want to know about anthropology as u took it as your optional now i am studying BA(hep) can i take anthro as my optional as i also had some intrest in it , if yes sugest me books , if no please give me any suggesion about optional selection ..
thank u for reading this letter anna

    • tejlohitreddy
      Dec 17, 2013 @ 18:00:28

vamsi, essay is something u should practice continously from the start of your preparation. you can see previous essays and see what issues are being asked and there after read in detail about them from internet or magazines like yojana etc. if some issues are not covered, u will get an idea of almost everything by the end of your preparation since general studies helps u in your essay preparation too. regarding anthro please see the link info for civil servants in the blog itself. regarding your optional dilemma, i am not an expert. please decide for yourself. but anthro is an easy and short subject. you can try it

    • tejlohitreddy
      Mar 04, 2014 @ 22:04:11

vamsi for general essay it depends on the topic on which you have to write. please write some mock essays in some instittues and get your answers checked.
you can take anthropology if you have interest in it. just check the syllabus once. the list of books i have mentioned in the link info for civil service aspirants in the blog itself. please refer to that

    3) what are the most important things to be practiced during preparation

well, ive completed my graduation in EEE, after so much of allegations in mind.
i finalised to opt for CSE-14. basically being from CBSE bkgrnd upto 12th, i found i could make it. but, wen i started my preparation some kind of terrible fear started in me. y coz, for
prelims: i read only hindu and practise csat. and for
mains: i follow UGC-CEC [consortium for educational communication] videos
    of history(30 videos), politics(30), economy(20), pubad(10) from
my doubt is whether will these kind of videos could bring success?
i strongly believe that “in order to get success, we need to be different”
i feel, em daring foolish. please help me dude.
i want u to once see one of those video on ur well known topic and advice whether will it be good or sufficient.
i choose my optional as GEOGRAPHY.
i even bought books for all syllabus but still mad since it gives me less concept for more number of pages.
i would b extremely mirth, if u could give me a valid response bro.

here it is, nd respond me dude…plz!

    • tejlohitreddy
      Mar 04, 2014 @ 21:41:52

i have not watched the videos for i dont have time. but u can check for yourself whether they are suffiicient or not by attempting the questions on particular topic from previous years question papers. that answers your doubts. and i dont know much about geography optional.

Do you suggest taking mocks for the interview? If they give us negative feedback, it could probably become a demotivating factor. What do you suggest? Have you taken mocks and what was their feedback? Did you find it useful?

    • Siri
      Apr 11, 2014 @ 00:36:53

You’ve got good marks in interview. What do you think was the main reason?
Is it honesty etc. etc. or really good answers etc. ? Were you tensed in the interview room? With what mindset should one go to the interview room?

  51. tejlohitreddy
    Dec 17, 2013 @ 18:01:52

its always better to select the subjects from your background except when they are too extensive or complicated. in your case i feel you can select one of your subjects. one thing to remember is no optional subject is easy. new subjects will be almost as difficult to master.

  52. tejlohitreddy
    Mar 04, 2014 @ 21:58:25

depends on yourself siva. if you are well versed in those subjects choose one of them. if not choose other small subjects like anthropology. sociology psyhology
