Hello Lohith .. How did you prepare for Culture .. Last year we found many questions like flute playing krishna etc .. Is spectrun book on culture sufficient for this exam ?

i didnt read spectrum. i read from krishna reddy,s indian history. it has a few chapters on art architecture. i think spectrum is good. but dont read the entire thing. read what is necessary. but i think its difficult to answer questions on culture since no book covers it properly including spectrum.

Thank you for the reply sir,for public policy I have ignou book but I should spend at least 1 week, what did u do for this topic?
And also in pub ad we refer 2-3 books for single chapter, how to revise atlast?did u make ur own notes?
Arc reports is it suffice if we refer summary?

for public policy i read sunil gupta notes, ignou notes( a little)( i think its average), nicolas henry( chapter 10), and still i feel i havent read adequately. so if you find any good books please read them.
making notes will help you if you are reading from multiple sources, but if a topic is concise and good in a single book then dont read from other books.
arc report is useful when you dont find the topics in any books. but if you have proper notes then recommendations are enough

Hello Lohith … I am preparing CSE with anthro as optional … I found from previous papers that paper 2 questions are little tricky n more generalized .. n wer as in paper 1 most of the qns are direct n got lot of scope to write really good ans with diagrams .. But I found most of the people got less marks in paper 1 .. what can be the reason ? what sould be the approach for paper 1 n paper 2 get max marks .. n also in paper 1 i found 1 qn – how natural selection acts on variation which is little tricky to ans I felt … Can you discuss little about this ? .. thank you

anup, may be that is the reason, because everybody writes well, they search for new things in the answers and there by award less marks. but you cant go on reading new things, so stick to what you are reading and try to do your best. and i cant discuss any questions bcoz i almost forgot everything i read).

The exam is just like our graduation exam anup, but here our job depends on it. that is the only difference. does good language help? it helps only if you know the basic content which by the way is far difficult than many people think.

rahul, never read tmh, krishna reddy is avg. most questions from ancient and medieval are from cultural aspect and not on kings and kingdoms as you can see from previous papers. krishna reddy has a chapter or two on those aspects but you need to expand with other sources like internet. dont know any other book

wts ur opinion on success ratio in 1st attempt…..thanks in anticipation

rohith, is it unpredictable? i cant really say? but involves a little luck. thats for sure. but your efforts dont go waste normally. there might be variation in the end result(ie which service u may get) but getting into the service depends on the amount of work u do. if you do you work properly, u will definitely get into the service. but no one can say that they will definitely get the service they want. back up plan is not mandatory. but it will be helpful. i know friends who resigned from jobs and wrote the exam. it all depends on how strongly motivated are you. delhi institutes i dont know much about, but i can only guess that they will be marginally better than those in hyd. but i dont think there is any need to go to delhi. since for mains no institute will do the justice. and as far as prelims is concerned u can get good coaching in hyd itself. i dont have any statistics about the success rate in 1st attempt. but since the changed pattern after 2008 it seems chances of clearing in the first attempt have increased drastically. further i doesnt matter which attempt it is. if you read what you ought to u can do it 1st attempt.

i am really concerned of wt if i dont clear(though its seems pessimistic)………..because i hail from a relatively gud engin clg in ap but no way matches with iit……so……the chances of me (at extreme cases) settling to software field if nt fruitful(if i wnt clear even after 3 attempts)……..are very less…………….so wuld u suggest me to prepare seriously after my btech……without any job r mtech……..thanks in anticipation……..ur suggestions are highly valuable to me

an year before prelims would be sufficient. institutes i know only db kumar institutes that too only for prelims. it is good. its a good idea to start prep from 3rd year. i dont know much about analog. but i have heard from a friend that its not up to the mark. i cant really suggest anything about your career choices. its best for you to decide. weigh your options and decide carefully. but if i were you i would start my prep from now itself so that you can continue later doing the job.

i can only suggest for prelims. i went to db kumar institute for prelims.
for economy i followed my institute running notes for prelims and used internet and newspaper for mains, but sriram ias notes seems to be good.( i am not sure)
i can only speak about pub ad since it was one of my optionals. last year’s paper was very difficult. but it might not be the case for the next year. between pub ad and history i think pub ad is shorter in syllabus and scope. kindly look into other optionals like anthropology, psychology, sociology, electrical engineering, mech eng, civil eng
regarding the paper you will find out yourself what to read and what not to read after a few months of reading. dont conc on political news, sport etc
maintaining notes is mandatory if you want to use it later for revision. 1 year is more than enough but i recommend you start from now itself.

even in graduation it depends on your work load and stress factors. will read more during weekends and inevitably less during weekdays. ultimate thing as i had said earlier is to have a clear plan and dead lines to complete the syllabus and not how many hours

Sir,I am writing here an answer for a questn from pub ad paper 2.I think u must have attempted this questn.I want to know wher I stand and how much should I improve bcoz I am not understanding the level of answers one must have written in pub ad who got the rank

    Q.’judges shouldn’t govern the country.they can only lay down a law,not interfere with governance’.discuss
Ans. Theory of separation of powers incorporated by the Indian constitution calls for separation of 3 organs of the state- exe, leg, jud.though governance of the country is prerogative of the executive but the judiciary’s efforts to make the exe accountable and responsible to the needs of the citizens led to judicial governance.
Article 50 of the constitution separates judiciary from executive.the constitution clearly demarcates the powers between 3 wings of the state.it provides judiciary the power of adjudication and interpretation of law while to exe the governance of the country which is the process of implementation of decisions.
However,in recent times judiciary has been increasingly issuing directives in the realm of governance.for example, issuing directives to the govt on river-interlinking project, which some argue thet only admn can understand the nitty gritty of the project like cost, feasibility etc; issuing directives to CBI and asking it to report directly to the court trespassing the exe as in 2g case etc.
Though this activism by the jud is good to occupy the space created by the exe due to it’s apathy to various issues but in long run it may disturb the balance of power and lead to concentration of power in one wing.so to reduce the interference of jud in the governance, exe should be assertive and not vacate constitutional space by it’s non- performance.

    Reply

    • tejlohitreddy
      Aug 28, 2013 @ 15:38:51

the answer should suffice. but judicial activism is not that bad. it led to origin of pil which is a powerful tool in hands of citizens and its activism is 2g is justified given the scale of losses and the govt itself being one of the accused. but its directives in inter river linking amount to judicial overreach. so write your answer accordingly. and you can state a few more examples. i forgot them

I am not saying jud activism is bad but conveying that due to non-performance of exe,jud has to play more assertive role.

For me when I see pub ad questions and try to answer..I don’t knw how to get good marks and how well should I write.

I have a doubt, anthropology is moving very slowly and I have been following Braintree notes but it has lot of content and I do not know what to read/ remember and what not. Now that not much time is left for mains, can you suggest what can be the best approach to finish the syllabus quickly or at least prioritise preparation?

follow the syllabus clearly. i know its difficult to cover the entire syllabus. but atleast try to revise what you read already and achieve perfection in those topics

      r they very strict……
I have a problem with my eye….but the Gazette says….for non technical services mypioa is accepted but without pathological myopia……but I May fall under pathological myopia….in that case as per gazzate I will be deemed unfit…..
but are they really that meticulous……
have u heard someone lost job…on grounds of medical issue…
as u are already into service….

ranjit, normally the medical tests are not that strict. they wouldnt know if you have pathological myopia. if they find out, then you are not eligible for technical services like ips, irts, rpf etc etc. buy there is very less chance of they finding out that. for relevant information file rti with upsc

anush reddy, contingency theory is mentioned clearly in the syllabus, but its difficult to answer a few questions in public administration. s polinaidu though easy to read doesnt cover all topics. you have to do a lot of work. you can make use of libraries, previous journals on administration, internet. etc. but do a detailed study of all topics mentioned in the syllabus. leave out the very vague topics.

    Hi Lohith Sir,

I am very surprised that you are investing your time to answer our questions. I guess Civil Service is not hectic! :)

It was two weeks ago that I learned more about IAS. And here I am, all set to crack the exam. I have one year of “full-time” study (yes, I am “deadly” serious about this) to prepare for prelims and main exams.

I was wondering about Public Administration. It’s not the subject I am passionate about per se, but having read books of similar kind I don’t have any problem with this optional. My question to you is this: how should I really start preparation? Should I equally divide my time for all the subjects or read books at length (I can do that and have that previously).

This is going to be my first attempt. Here is what I did in the past two books:

    – Read 30% of Indian Polity by Laxmikanth.
    – Read 30% of spectrum’s Modern India.
    – Read NCERT books.

Going through your comments, I have realized that:

    – Buying TMH is a waste of money and time.
    – It’s important to do chapters selectively

My background is engineering and I am barely good in Economics.

I was thinking if “now” is the right time to prepare for PA (while also reading newspaper… by the way, do you recommend The Hindu or/and anything else?).

If you can tell me a list of books for PA, we would be grateful as well. :)

    Really appreciate your help.

    Talk soon,

anon, public administration has not been very scoring during my attempt. if you have any other optional which you are comfortable with like one of the engineering subjects or smaller subjects like anthro or pscyhco please look into them. then if you are determined about public administration then be ready to do lot of work.. the book list has been provided in the blog itself in the link info for civil servants, regarding time allocation, you can read general studies on a daily basis and then allot some time of each day for different subjects, the hindu is sufficient.

vamsi, essay is something u should practice continously from the start of your preparation. you can see previous essays and see what issues are being asked and there after read in detail about them from internet or magazines like yojana etc. if some issues are not covered, u will get an idea of almost everything by the end of your preparation since general studies helps u in your essay preparation too. regarding anthro please see the link info for civil servants in the blog itself. regarding your optional dilemma, i am not an expert. please decide for yourself. but anthro is an easy and short subject. you can try it

    of history(30 videos), politics(30), economy(20), pubad(10) from

my doubt is whether will these kind of videos could bring success?
i strongly believe that “in order to get success, we need to be different”
i feel, em daring foolish. please help me dude.
i want u to once see one of those video on ur well known topic and advice whether will it be good or sufficient.
i choose my optional as GEOGRAPHY.
i even bought books for all syllabus but still mad since it gives me less concept for more number of pages.
i would b extremely mirth, if u could give me a valid response bro.
